Exit Counseling

Borrowing for your education does have long-term effects, but there is no reason why these effects cannot be positive! Exit counseling will provide valuable information on managing your student loans after college.

Federal regulations require all student loan borrowers to participate in an exit counseling session when they:

  • Graduate
  • Drop below half time status, or
  • Withdraw

Exit counseling can be administered in different ways by different schools:

  • Attend in-person counseling with your financial aid advisor, in a classroom setting or one-on-one.
  • Access online student loan counseling through Mapping Your Future. OR
  • Use printed materials provided by the MDHE, which may have been mailed to you.

Check with your school to find out which method they prefer. Remember, your school must receive verification that you have completed an exit counseling session.
